Hydro 101: The World of Produce

World of Produce

In the world of produce, you have the retailers, restaurants and chefs that are for the most part the face of the produce industry. But don’t forget who the real rock stars are it’s the small scale farmer, our local producers, they are the last control we have on what is happening to our food. It’s large agribusinesses, retail chains that are re-defining our choices and freedoms we have with the foods we buy and eat.

Regional family-farms local farming with our last hope in having a say about the food we eat. Rite now most of our food comes from 1000s of miles away, and in most cases do not follow the same guide lines we do when it comes to the way or food is grown and handled. We need to save our local production, with fuel costs, terrorist and population growth it’s just the smart thing to do. So for first time in a long time with our support of local farming it can support local markets and small producers. And in a short time as they become viable, creating their own brand and following for their local products. A local system of sustainable food is a more efficient way to get and have a say in the foods we buy and eat.

The problem or the difficulty in small scale farming is how to make big profit, off a small farm with out over working the land, waterways or our self’s. It takes a lot of land to make a profit dirt farming, with all the labor to work the soil, weeding, pest control, wasted water, bending over all day, with all this work its no wonder our small farmer are over worked and not making much of a profit. The answer is hydroponics a way to reduce labor, pesticides, increase profit, and save soil, and waterways. Recirculation hydroponics systems keep excess nutrients from flowing in to our under ground water supply and saves water over all. Here in America our farm land is being lost by over 15,000 acres a day. Something like 6 million acres a year and about 3 million from erosion and bad land management. Hydroponics can stop all this waste and provide sustainable foods.
