It is back to Nature. The raw material is basalt rocks and chalk. These are melted at 1600 C°. The lava is blown into a spinning chamber, which pulls the lava into fibers, much like ‘cotton candy’. When Mother nature makes this wool we call it ‘angel hair’. If you have ever visited a volcano, you may have seen the fluffy angel hair flying around. Stonewool products are made from basalt rocks, which come from the Earth. Stonewool is composed roughly of the following elements: Mimicking Mother Nature's production of "angel hair" during volcanic activity, the Grodan Stonewool manufacturer heats rocks to 1600°C, to create lava. The lava is blown into a spinning chamber, which makes fibers similar to cotton candy. These fibers are bagged loosely as "Stonewool granulate". They are also packed into mats, from which Grodan cubes, blocks and slabs are cut. The products make excellent use of natural resources: one cubic yard of rock becomes 37 cubic yards of wool! The fibers are packed together into a mat and cut Grodan slabs & cubes from it. The stonewool granulate is bags with little flocks of 'angel hair'. Grodan stonewool was developed in Denmark in the early 1970's.

Coconut fiber contains approximately 75% water and 25% air - an ideal ratio for almost any culture. This capacity to hold water makes the medium particularly suitable to root cuttings. Coconut naturally buffers pH which means that all the elements required for the plant's healthy growth are readily accessible to the plant. |
Hydroton is our trade name for "expanded clay," a lightweight gravel which is manufactured specifically for hydroponic cultivation. Our supplier is Jongkind in Holland, the source of the finest quality expanded clay in the world. This media is the first choice for many commercial Dutch growers specializing in flower and vegetable cultivation. Not to be confused with many other kinds of expanded clay which look similar but which are often toxic, Hydroton is pH stabilized and releases practically no minerals into the nutrient stream; in other words Hydroton is almost completely inert - except for offering excellent moisture and oxygen capacity to stimulate healthy root development. |
| In horticultural applications, perlite is used throughout the world as a component of soilless growing mixes where it provides aeration and optimum moisture retention for superior plant growth. For rooting cuttings, 100% perlite is used. Studies have shown that outstanding yields are achieved with perlite hydroponic systems. Other benefits of horticultural perlite are its neutral pH and the fact that it is sterile and weed-free. In addition, its light weight makes it ideal for use in container growing. Other horticultural applications for perlite are as a carrier for fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides and for pelletizing seed. Horticultural perlite is as useful to the home gardener as it is to the commercial grower. It is used with equal success in greenhouse growing, landscaping applications and in the home in house plants. |
Vermiculite has been used in various industries for over 80 years. It is used in the construction, agricultural, horticultural, and industrial markets. Vermiculite is the mineralogical name given to hydrated laminar magnesium-aluminum-ironsilicate which resembles mica in appearance. Vermiculite is found in various parts of the world. Locations of the predominant commercial mines are in Australia, Brazil, China, Kenya South Africa, USA and Zimbabwe. Vermiculite mines are surface operations where ore is separated from other minerals, and then screened or classified into several basic particle sizes. When subjected to heat vermiculite has the unusual property of exfoliating or expanding into worm-like pieces (the name vermiculite is derived from the Latin 'vermiculare' - to breed worms). This characteristic of exfoliation, the basis for commercial use of the mineral, is the result of the mechanical separation of the layers by the rapid conversion of contained water to steam. |
Mined then kiln dried and made into small rocks, similar to hydroton but has silica and mineral value. It is 100% organic, and will promote finner, bigger, and healthier roots. It comes in 20 Liter bags. Can be used by itself, or mixed with other mediums like rockwool, coco, or soil to create custom mix. As with all mediums, you need to soak or wash the rock to get all the dust and particles off to create a more clean and stable medium. |
